MADD GO-KART
AMHERST - The Bordertown Chapter of MADD Canada has unveiled their latest tool for teaching kids about the dangers of impaired driving. A go-kart, purchased by The Co-operators Insurance Company, will give students the opportunity to experience how difficult it is to operate a vehicle while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
"We're going to have a track set up and the kids will get to drive the track while wearing our Fatal Vision Goggles", said Cst. Francis Smith of the Amherst Police Department.
Smith says the Fatal Vision Goggles give the students a good idea of what it's like to see through impaired eyes but students need to remember that their thoughts are also affected by drinking and smoking.
"When you're being the wheel of a car you have to be able to make good decisions and think clearly," said Cst. Smith. "When you're under the influence, you're not able to do that," he added. Wendi Chase of The Co-operators Insurance says she hopes the go-kart will get kids interested in learning about the reality of impaired driving and that hopefully the experience will help them to make good decisions in the future. "The statistics don't lie. Kids need to understand that they are putting themselves and others in grave danger when they make the decision to drink and drive," she added.
With the support of the Bordertown Chapter of MADD, The Co-operators, the Amherst Police Department and Carters Cresting, the go-kart will soon be making appearances at schools in Cumberland County and beyond. "Schools from Yarmouth to New Glasgow are asking to have the go-kart come to their school," said Cst. Smith. "As far as we know, we're the only ones in the province and possibly the Atlantic provinces to be using this method of teaching."
